Born in Michigan, this descendent of horse traders, farmers and musicians was raised in a home steeped in music and having good times. From the earliest days in Kalamazoo, where Sam's first recollection of having a guitar in the house to the folk musicians that played at Sam's parents' parties in the early 70's, his appreciation for music came from the willingness of people to take time to show him songs and their willingness to let him try to play their musical instruments. Sam's late mother, Trudie Reese bought him his first bass guitar and amplifier and continued to support his musical endeavors for the rest of her life. His father, Richard Reese is his musical mentor due to the vast music library that Sam has had access to throughout his life. The upright bass that Sam plays in Tiger Maple String Band was broken and dilapidated and came from the attic of sax player Archie Bateman, as a gift. The bass is called "The Gift" and Sam's gift for playing it is something he loves to share with all people who love music and good times.
